Monessen: Past, Present & Future
Monessen has faced periods of profound change before. In the 1950s, city leaders were already confronting questions about population, infrastructure, redevelopment, and the strength of the local tax base. Their response included major urban-renewal efforts intended to reshape the city's economic future.
Nearly seven decades later, many of those fundamental questions remain. In April 2026, Monessen deliberately looked 15 to 20 years into the future through a two-day Strategic Foresight Workshop using a modified UNESCO Futures Literacy Laboratory methodology.
An Exceptional Team Looking Toward Monessen's Future
The workshop brought together an unusually accomplished interdisciplinary team of futurists, engineers, executives, developers, and strategic thinkers, including multiple Ph.D.-level experts.
Dr. Joel Mozer, Futurist • Dr. Gabriele Rizzo, Futurist • Dr. Michael Larson, Innovation Engineer • Dr. David Hardy, Senior Executive Advisor • Thomas Roberts, Senior Engineer, Air Force Research Laboratory
Rather than attempting to predict one future, participants examined expected futures, desired futures, hidden assumptions, and alternative possibilities. The goal was to improve decisions being made today by considering how Monessen could function under very different conditions tomorrow.
The challenge is not simply to recreate Monessen's past. It is to build upon its history while creating a resilient community with stronger neighborhoods, modern infrastructure, new investment, economic opportunity, and a quality of life that attracts future generations.
